Software built to order · Genoa, Italy

The program you need isn't rented: it's built.

Whether the work runs on memory today, whether you pay a monthly fee for a program that isn't yours, or whether there is only an idea to get started.

From Genoa.

Tell me where you are starting from

Where people usually start

  • There is work that eats your time, and no program follows it.

    That means things like:

    • Counting by hand what a photograph would say on its own.
    • The same figure copied from one program into another.
    • In the evening the numbers add up by approximation.

The way you work is your advantage: it is not something to be straightened out so it fits inside a package.

    How it gets tackled
  • The program you use is not yours, and every month reminds you.

    That means things like:

    • A fee that grows along with the work, or a commission on every payment taken.
    • The rules and the price are decided by someone else.
    • The data lives at their place.

Building it is a cost that ends at some point — but it is not always worth it, and the sum is done over three years.

    How the sum is done
  • You have an idea, and the technical half to get it going is missing.

You do not need a technical partner on day one. You need to know things like:

    • Whether the idea stands up.
    • What the hardest piece costs.
    • Which is the smallest version worth putting in someone's hands already.

That is where it starts, and that is all that gets built.

    How you get going

These are three starting points, not three closed lists: if your case sits between them, or outside them altogether, tell me about it anyway. Some people arrive with a different arrangement — paying far less than the build costs, and holding it under licence: that can be done, and the first thing I tell you is what you give up in exchange, and for how long it ties you in.

How I work

  • First it gets written, then it gets programmed.

Before the quote you get a document with what will be built, under which rules, and what “done” means for each piece. It is yours even if we do not go on from there.

  • Where it helps, I come and see how you work.

Some things do not get told in a meeting: they get seen. Where the real work happens — on a vehicle, on the shop floor, in the warehouse — half a day is worth more than three meetings in an office.

  • I tell you what it costs to keep it running.

Servers, outside services, devices: costs that stay with you over time, written down beforehand and not once the work is finished.

  • You can watch the work while it moves.

A test environment you can always reach: what goes into production you have already seen working.

The whole path, stage by stage

What I tend not to do

  • If you call me, I run the project.

I do not join somebody else's team as a pair of hands. I talk to whoever decides, I write the project document and I answer for how the system is made: they are one thing, and split apart what you called me for is not there any more.

A technical lead already in the company is not a problem: that is who I talk to. The point is not who is in charge at your end, it is who answers for how the system is made.

  • Websites and online shops are not my trade.

Brochure sites, blogs and online shops are done perfectly well with ready-made tools: having them written to order means paying more to get less. If instead the value is in the mechanism — who books what, how a payment is split, what happens when something fails — then it is software, and it is my trade.

The same holds for a new idea.

  • I do not take over software written by other people.

Maintaining somebody else's program is not what I offer. Connecting to it, on the other hand, depends on how it is made: if it is set up to talk to other programs, with a documented interface, it is not a problem.
